Founded by co-directors Nicholas Renouf and Britt Wheeler, the Schola Cantorum of the Saint Gregory Society is a choral ensemble dedicated to the performance of Gregorian plainchant and sacred polyphony in the sung Latin Mass. Comprised of some twenty professional church musicians, the choir centers its repertory on the chants of the Graduale Romanum and the a capella choral masterworks of the high Renaissance.
The Schola’s exemplary singing has led to concert appearances, broadcasts and professional recordings designed to underscore the performers’ commitment to having the great music they sing experienced in its intended context, i.e., within the classical Roman Liturgy. The Schola is frequently engaged to provide music for the liturgy for sister organizations on special occasions such as the inaugural Solemn Mass of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter at St. Peter’s Cathedral at Scranton, Pennsylvania, in October 1992.
The Schola’s CD recording Solemn Mass of Christmas Day was chosen for the musical portion of twelve BBC Christmas broadcasts in December, 1995; excerpts from Solemn Mass of Pentecost were included in the 1994 Public Television documentary on the life of Pope John Paul II.
